3rd World Jim Jam

I’m not sure how to say this exactly, but this is probably the craziest mix I’ve ever put together for anyone. I mean crazy!

If you’ve never heard Balinese temple music, a Native American war dance, Tibetan children’s choirs, or beats from the Favelas of Rio, then you’re in for it. Lets call it a cluster of funk, as diverse as the United Nations.

Here’s the shakedown:

01. Introspective – Outlandish
02. Retorno de Jedi – Bonde Do Bogdov, MC Pe DePano
03. O… Saya – A.R. Rahman
04. Starlight in Daden – Ekova
05. Beyond Words – Outlandish
06. Liquid Dance – A.R. Rahman, Palakkad Sriram & Madhumitha
07. A Child’s Prayer – Waterbone Tibet
08. Kepandung Sita – Sekaa Kecak Puspita
09. We’re There – Warscout Northern Cree
10. Jayan Tangis – Sekaa Jegog Yuskumara
11. The Wedding Celebration – Moh Alileche

I hope you enjoy the utter madness, but after a listen it’s nice to know that there are some people jamming out in the corners of our globe. As a preview, there is some video footage of the “Kecak” found at track 8, which is Balinese temple music telling the epic Hindu poem, Ramayana. The story follows two characters, Rama + Sita, who depict the Monomyth and is the basis for almost all South Asian culture. (A European counterpart to The Ramayana could be the Adam & Eve story)

Airloom

I keep running across amazing projects coming out of the Interaction Graduate Department at SVA. This one caught my eye today students made a prototype of a device that would capture images and sound at a dinner table and store it creating a timeline of all the going’s on. Great concept and pretty killer implementation. I like the idea of making something digital that doesn’t feel disposable. I have a sort of manufactured nostalgia for the days when you bought one pair of shoes that you kept for 30 years and used your grandfather’s pen that was passed down to you by your Dad. It’s good to see that other people are thinking about how technology can be implemented to create something of lasting value, not just another laptop that is going to feel old and tired in a year or so.

Julian Gese

I love that this dude has a camera around his neck all the time now – or is it just on the weekends? Whenever it is Julian Gese is creating some great imagery in and around our Portland, and he’s just getting started! Julian is a fellow in the GD program with Ben + I, and is a super giggly good man.

I can’t wait to see how his eye develops and how he art directs his future photographs. Great work, Mr. Gese!

Jason Polan draws YOU

What a happy accident, how I found out that Jason Polan is drawing every person in New York. I was doing my usual stalking of Zachary Schomburg and look! he’s up there, doing a reading on 9th street in NYC last August.

I found myself scrolling and scrolling through his drawings of the people around him and didn’t even realize I had been captivated. What a little hermit he must be, stealing glances and quickly drawing so as not to be noticed. I’d totally pose for this man. And he wants you to! Jason has listed specific instructions on how to get yourself drawn by him on his blog.

So I’ll fly over next week, pose for 2 minutes, and then come on back home. Sounds justifiable.

Chicago, ILL 4840 miles // Zach’s Road

I found a group
of hollowed-out opera singers
growing trees

inside themselves.
They were all wearing red flannel.
When I looked inside one,

there was a perfectly
functional ecosystem, some
birds, some fire.

When I looked inside another,
there was a smaller
opera singer, and inside him

was a lumberjack,
sharply dressed,
hollowing out a tree.

Excerpt from The Man Suit by Zachary Schomburg.

This is a small piece of one of my favorites from Mr. Schomburg. There are various chapters to this poem that meander around the theme of what he found in a forest. The poem jumps around other poems, popping up in later pages with new numbered dreams, sequences, and images so crisp they fall right out of the page like pick-up-stix!

I have never been on a trip as long as what Zach is experiencing right now, I bet it is an odd sensation. Perhaps when he gets back he’ll be done travelling for a while? Or is it just a really long walking dream full of faces and happenings?
