Miami, FL 6220 Miles // Zach’s Road

Before I get into the poem I’ve selected from Zach’s work I’d like to comment on his photographs lately. It is getting harder and harder to decide which ones to pull from his collections. I find myself falling into more and more of them, perhaps his photographic voice is becoming parallel with his poetic voice? Have they merged? After 6,220 miles, it would be hard not to morph into something. Whatever it is, it’s gorgeous.

First, however, a fitting tune for this passage & image bank. “Old Haunts, New Cities” by Typhoon:
(this’ll open up in a new winder so you can come back and browse)

Listen toOld Haunts, New Cities

Full of Knives

1. His back is full of knives. Notes are brittle around the
blades.

2. He sleeps face down every night in a chalk outline of
himself.

3. He has difficulties with metal detectors.

4. At birthday parties, someone might politely ask, may I
borrow one of those knives to slice this chocolate cake?

5. He likes to stand with his back to walls. At restaurants,
he likes the corner tables.

6. There is a detectve that calls him to ask about the brittle
notes. Also:  a biographer, a woman who’d like to film a
documentary, a curator of a museum, his mother.
I can’t read
them
, he says. They’re on my back.

7. It would be a mistake for anyone to assume he wants the
knives removed.

Excerpt from The Man Suit by Zachary Schomburg

The last photo isn’t from Florida, but back when Zach was in Tennessee. It  is pretty wonderful, I can almost hear the lawnmowers and sprinklers in the background of that day. Are they counting seeds?

Matchbook Registry

It might only be because it reminds me of the bowl full of old matchbooks that sat on an upstairs bookshelf in my house as a child, but I’ve been digging through the Matchbook Registry basically since I got up this morning. It’s pretty incredible the amount of thought and attention to detail that went into some of these. It’s inspiring to see someone put some much craft into a hotel matchbook cover design.

Mayfly & Icecave Mixtape

Mayfly & Icecave Mixtape

Mayfly because well it’s May and the flies are coming, and Icecave because it’s still cold in my apartment. I’m caught right between thermal socks and flip flops. But we’re here to talk about music, not bitch about the weather!

This mix is basically most of what I am listening to right now, a lot of it fairly new so I hope you haven’t heard some of this stuff before. It is pretty jammy, by that I mean it’s more conventional than any other mixtape I’ve put together so far. Definitely some beat loops in here, but I wouldn’t put something in if it weren’t worth the wait.

Head-bopping is sure to happen, I seem to be able to work pretty well with this sort of thing in the background.

Here’s the shakedown:

01. Tell ‘Em – Sleigh Bells
02. Young Again – Kasper Bjørke
03. None of Dem ft. Röyksopp – Robyn
04. Acapella – Kelis
05. Something Bigger, Something Better – Amanda Blank
06. Ambling Alp – Yeasayer
07. Party With Children – Ratatat
08. Animals – Kasper Bjørke
09. Pray for Rain – Massive Attack
10. Kandi – One Eskimo
11. Tornado – Jónsi

Super happy with most of Robyn’s new album, Body Talk Pt. 1, as well as the single from Kelis, Acapella. Actually I love the video to Acapella, when Kelis coronates herself with a crown of ferns over a video loop. I was first sold on Kelis when she redid Oceanaia with Bjork – what a voice. Here is the video to Acapella, which you can also listen to in this mixtape!

Studio Labyrinth

Our studio needed some love in the common space right outside our door. It is a shared space with six doors which usually remain closed. My assignment was to create a sense of value without spending any money. So Jelly and I spent five days painting an 800 year-old Chartres labyrinth – David Bowie was not involved whatsoever.

Jelly was the brain behind the measurements + outline, and the rest was lots of affection, patience, and basically a week of meditation on the floor with aching knees, elbows, and hips.

The very talented Chris Hornbecker was kind enough to pop on over and photograph it for us (last photo).

Thanks to our patient neighbors who humored us by hopping over strings & wet paint every day. You guys rule.

There are a few more process shots over at Flickr, and Jelly had a few comments of his own!

We Are 100! Talk to me, Goose

Its our 100th anniversary! Well, our 100th post, so close enough. It was so much fun to pool these images from almost all our posts to check out what we really look like – crazy!

We started this blog to share because it just felt natural. After 100 posts, I still feel the strong pull to share when I find something gorgeous or interesting. I’m just scratching the surface, but I’m excited to continue, and excited to hear what you have to say about it.
I am interested in creating more original content for this space – but of course sometimes that is time prohibitive. I’d be very interested to see if you, our beloved readers, had any input!

What would you like to see?
Is there a gaping hole in our weekly roll that begs to be filled?

I’m terribly interested to see what you have to say, this is,
after all, partly your blog!
