From Where We Stand No.2
Shipman Beach | Sage Warner Is there really anything wrong with feeling insignificant? Let me tell you about a place called Shipman Beach. Shipman is located in Puna, on the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii; a region where using the water caught on your roof to do dishes is not a choice made for environmental reasons, but rather because your neighborhood lacks basic infrastructure. Where hippie communes thrive, papayas are grown and wild boars terrorize the people... Read More
Miami, FL 6220 Miles // Zach’s Road
Before I get into the poem I’ve selected from Zach’s work I’d like to comment on his photographs lately. It is getting harder and harder to decide which ones to pull from his collections. I find myself falling into more and more of them, perhaps his photographic voice is becoming parallel with his poetic voice? Have they merged? After 6,220 miles, it would be hard not to morph into something. Whatever it is, it’s gorgeous. First, however, a fitting tune... Read More
Matchbook Registry
It might only be because it reminds me of the bowl full of old matchbooks that sat on an upstairs bookshelf in my house as a child, but I’ve been digging through the Matchbook Registry basically since I got up this morning. It’s pretty incredible the amount of thought and attention to detail that went into some of these. It’s inspiring to see someone put some much craft into a hotel matchbook cover design. Read More
Mayfly & Icecave Mixtape
DOWNLOAD Mayfly & Icecave Mixtape Mayfly because well it’s May and the flies are coming, and Icecave because it’s still cold in my apartment. I’m caught right between thermal socks and flip flops. But we’re here to talk about music, not bitch about the weather! This mix is basically most of what I am listening to right now, a lot of it fairly new so I hope you haven’t heard some of this stuff before. It is pretty jammy, by that I mean it’s... Read More
Studio Labyrinth
Our studio needed some love in the common space right outside our door. It is a shared space with six doors which usually remain closed. My assignment was to create a sense of value without spending any money. So Jelly and I spent five days painting an 800 year-old Chartres labyrinth – David Bowie was not involved whatsoever. Jelly was the brain behind the measurements + outline, and the rest was lots of affection, patience, and basically a week of meditation on the floor... Read More
We Are 100! Talk to me, Goose
Its our 100th anniversary! Well, our 100th post, so close enough. It was so much fun to pool these images from almost all our posts to check out what we really look like – crazy! We started this blog to share because it just felt natural. After 100 posts, I still feel the strong pull to share when I find something gorgeous or interesting. I’m just scratching the surface, but I’m excited to continue, and excited to hear what you have to say about it. I am interested... Read More
3rd World Jim Jam Mixtape
DOWNLOAD 3rd World Jim Jam I’m not sure how to say this exactly, but this is probably the craziest mix I’ve ever put together for anyone. I mean crazy! If you’ve never heard Balinese temple music, a Native American war dance, Tibetan children’s choirs, or beats from the Favelas of Rio, then you’re in for it. Lets call it a cluster of funk, as diverse as the United Nations. Here’s the shakedown: 01. Introspective – Outlandish 02. Retorno... Read More
Airloom
I keep running across amazing projects coming out of the Interaction Graduate Department at SVA. This one caught my eye today students made a prototype of a device that would capture images and sound at a dinner table and store it creating a timeline of all the going’s on. Great concept and pretty killer implementation. I like the idea of making something digital that doesn’t feel disposable. I have a sort of manufactured nostalgia for the days when you bought... Julian Gese
I love that this dude has a camera around his neck all the time now – or is it just on the weekends? Whenever it is Julian Gese is creating some great imagery in and around our Portland, and he’s just getting started! Julian is a fellow in the GD program with Ben + I, and is a super giggly good man. I can’t wait to see how his eye develops and how he art directs his future photographs. Great work, Mr. Gese! Julian Gese site | photoblog Read More
Jason Polan draws YOU
What a happy accident, how I found out that Jason Polan is drawing every person in New York. I was doing my usual stalking of Zachary Schomburg and look! he’s up there, doing a reading on 9th street in NYC last August. I found myself scrolling and scrolling through his drawings of the people around him and didn’t even realize I had been captivated. What a little hermit he must be, stealing glances and quickly drawing so as not to be noticed. I’d totally pose... Read More
